1. What are stem cells? Discuss their types and uses in the human body?

Ans. Stem cells are unspecialized or undifferentiated cells which divide and produce different types of specialized and differentiated cells. They are naturally present in our bone marrow.

Types of Stem Cells: There are 5 types of stem cells :

■Totipotent stem cell- Totipotent cells can form all the cell types in a body.

■Pluripotent stem cell- Pluripotent cells can give rise to all of the cell types that make up the body.

■Multipotent stem cell- Multipotent cells can develop into more than one cell type, but are more limited than pluripotent cells.

■Oligopotent stem cell- a stem cell that is able to form two or more mature cell types within a tissue.

■Unipotent stem cell-These stem cells can produce only one cell type,

Characteristics of Stem Cells: Stem cells have 3 main characteristics :

 ■ It can undergo multiple division cycles.

■They have self renewal ability.

■ They can produce different types of cells.

Functions of Stem Cells in Human Body:

●It supplies new cells for growth and development of our body.

■It supplies cells for healing and repair in the body.

■It replaces the dead cells by producing new cells.  Eg : RBC
